Book Review: Atomic Habits, by James Clear

This might be my favorite book of 2019! Every ‘logical’ argument I can think of against achieving my loftiest goals was destroyed in the pages of this book. Some of my top takeaways:

  1. “Time will multiply what you feed it”

  2. Goals are garbage. Here’s why:

    1. Problem #1: Winners and losers have the same goals.

    2. Problem #2: Achieving a goal is only a temporary change.

    3. Problem #3: Goals restrict your happiness.

    4. Problem #4: Goals are at odds with long-term progress.

  3. Tying habits to identity: What kind of person does that? (i.e. goes to the gym regularly, or on the other side of the coin, ‘bails on the gym all the time’). The idea of tying identity to a habit makes it more natural (or unnatural, if you’re trying to break a habit)

  4. “That which is immediately rewarded is repeated. That which is immediately punished is avoided.”

  5. Pat Riley’s Career Best Effort system
